And curiously, I can think of few other samples that would compliment Del's urgent delivery as effectively as Albarn's laconic vocal haze. On "Clint Eastwood", Del tha Funkee Homosapien handles the song's verses, allowing Damon a small cameo in the looped chorus. "New Genious (Brother)" is gloomy trip-hop with orchestral flourishes that wrap around the flux of Albarn's falsetto. On "Man Research (Clapper)", Damon wails hysterically over Dan's relentless, echoing thump.

Gorillaz's best tracks exploit the unlikely, but successful dynamic between Albarn and Nakamura.

As a result, this record reveals itself as far less disposable than its cartoon cover art suggests. No, what we've got here is the same brooding backpacker hip-hop that elevated the similar Deltron 3030 LP to unforeseen heights. Nakamura's refreshing production doesn't rely on today's hip-hop skitters and squiggles for its futurism. And that, friends, is why Gorillaz is a conceptual failure.īut maybe this is for the best. There's no band (animated or otherwise) making this music it's the Automator throwing down beats, manipulating samples, and letting Kid Koala's scratches interrupt his flow. Dan "The Automator" Nakamura is similarly recognizable. Early reports suggested that Albarn contributed to only a few songs, but he could rightfully be called the band's frontman his croon can be heard on all but 4 of the album's 16 tracks. Even people who only know Blur as "that band who did 'Woo-Hoo'" will immediately detect Albarn's ever-so-Brit pipes. Dirty Harry is an attempt at expressing a message that war is wrong on all fronts, no matter what.ĭirty Harry gets a 4/5 for its strong message and themes. As soon as the record begins, the cartoon façade fades. Today, we are still at war with insurgents in Afghanistan. It was only 6 years later that President Obama had pulled out troops out of Iraq. Despite unpopular support, the wars had dragged on even past George W. At the end of the song, the singer says, “Man, all I want to do is dance.” Capping the song off like this is just a way of saying that war is bad and no one wants to ever take a real part in it due to its destructiveness.Īlbarn and Hewlett meant to express their disdain of the United State’s government’s actions that brought on the onset of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. We can most definitely confirm the singer’s a soldier when he reveals in the next stanza that “your waters from a bottle, mine’s from a canteen.” All of this is reinforced when the singer also says things like, “At night I hear shots… The cost of life, It seems to get cheaper, Out in the desert… The war is over, So said the speaker with the flight suit on,” with the last line a direct reference to President Bush who delivered his “Mission Accomplished” speech in a flight suit. When the singer also says in the next stanza, “I’m the reason why you fill your Isuzu”, the singer is referring to the fact tat the wars in the middle east were largely for oil, in which the citizens of rich economies take for granted everyday. “I’m a peace loving decoy” explains that the soldier may actually just be a regular civilian looking for peace and love but is instead stuck in the middle of a war zone with no choice but to fight back, changing “the whole occasion to a pine box six-under”, or in other words, spreading coffins.

The third stanza explains that the soldier has “his act right” in his backpack, threatening retaliation if “you act quite difficult”, meanwhile knowing that there are also those out there who “ and like me”, meaning that throughout all of the excuses being used to justify a war, the unintended consequences of which foster an environment full of vigilantes and retribution seekers. The first stanza explains that the singer needs a gun for protection while acknowledging that those that are “burning in the sun…ain’t got a chance.” This might be a nod to a soldier serving in the Middle East somewhere if we are to assume that the song was, in fact, about the wars set out from the Bush Presidency. Even the lyrics within the song nod to real life events concerning the Iraq War under the Bush Administration.Įxamining the lyrics much closer might reveal a bit about the song’s main message or theme.
GORILLAZ CLINT EASTWOOD ALBUM COVER MOVIE
Dirty Harry is the name of a character that actor Clint Eastwood had played in the titular movie of the same name, in which a police detective sets out to prevent a crime. The single cover is a play on the movie poster for the war movie “Full Metal Jacket”. Dirty Harry is a track with so many references with real life events and parodies cultural icons, more specifically war in its entirety.

The third single of Gorillaz’s album, Demon Days, is a doozy.
